At this hectic time of the year it is very easy to get caught up in tasks: our work, travel, shopping, etc and sometimes we forget what it is all about. All you need to do is read the following story to remember what is really important : friends, family, God and country.

As I sat in the lovely Detroit Airport yesterday recouping from 2 days with Dave and Mark, I saw a great example of what Christmas is all about. I was standing in a very crowded waiting area while my delayed plane was finally arriving. Everyone was crowding and shuffling to get a position in the cattle stampede when it happened. The passengers began to come off the plane FINALLY, and a wounded soldier in uniform coming back from fighting for our country, departed the plane and the restless, frustrated, angry crowd all of a sudden, transformed themselves into a family type group welcoming a loved one home. We all stood up and applauded, totally impromptu, for about 2 minutes. The soldier was weeping under his sunglasses and tears streamed down his face. His family ran to the front of the waiting area, his wife and 2 kids and they jumped in his arms and embraced. He turned to all of us and said he was so thankful to fight for such a great country and be home after 2 years and he yelled MERRY CHRISTMAS and God Bless America!!!

I will never forget it. I am sorry for the emotional email, but I thought who better to share it with than you!

Please be safe today and listen for the ringing of the bell, because it will always be there for those who truly BELIEVE!!!!!

Marcellus Romero Kibby I, affectionately called “Nicky”, was born on May 3, 1967, in Dallas, Texas to Arthur E. Kibby and Beverly J. Hunter departed this life after a courageous battle with diabetes. Marcellus attended Columbus Public Schools and a graduate of Beechcroft High School in 1986, where he was a four year letterman in Band. He was a dedicated employee of 20 years at Schottenstein’s North. Throughout his illness, his stewardship never wavered and was evident by his presence at several funeral homes he gave his time throughout Columbus. Marcellus is preceded in death by his father Arthur E. Kibby and step-father, William “Glenn” Hunter. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of 20 years, Marchele L. Kibby; son Marcellus R. Kibby II; mother Beverly J. Hunter; sister Annetta M. Kibby; step-mother Pearl J. DSW to become official shoe provider for Miss America

There she is, Miss America in her DSW shoes.

Columbus-based DSW Shoe Warehouse and the Miss America Organization today will announce a three-year partnership that calls for the retailer to become the official provider of shoes for the annual pageant and a national sponsor for the organization.

The pageant, which will again be hosted by Mario Lopez, will be presented on Jan. 30 and air live from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas on TLC.

The opening number will feature all 53 contestants stepping out in DSW footwear.

The two companies also will work together to develop a unique brand of footwear, which will be a first for Miss America. The contestants will wear the shoes, probably in the evening-gown segment of the show, starting in 2011.

Pageant officials approached DSW several weeks ago proposing a partnership, said Mike MacDonald, president and CEO of DSW Shoe Warehouse. They proposed an affiliation "whereby we could become a lead sponsor for the Miss America pageant and also develop a product that could be incorporated into the pageant."

The notion was attractive for several reasons, DSW officials said.

"We have a very strong connection to women - as does the pageant, of course - so it felt like a natural," said Leslie Neville, director of investor relations at DSW.

In addition, the affiliation promises to "provide us with fairly significant publicity on a year-round basis," MacDonald said. "That was attractive to us. We operate in 39 states and would love to have a national presence and fuller recognition of DSW."

The shoe retailer's "style fits with our message that Miss America is contemporary, hip and a style icon," said Art McMaster, president and CEO of the Miss America Organization. "We're anxious to help promote a wonderful company that shares the same strong connection to women we do."

The partnership is a first for DSW, which previously had a relationship with the LPGA, "but nothing this significant," company officials said.

The shoe company is scheduled to announce the partnership this morning with current Miss America, Katie Stam of Indiana, in attendance.

Financial elements of the agreement include an annual payment by DSW plus royalty payments on the Miss America shoe line, MacDonald said, without elaborating on figures.

After the next winner is crowned Miss America 2010, she will travel 20,000 miles every month on her national media tour and probably make frequent stops at DSW locations, MacDonald said. In addition, also in partnership with DSW, the 53 Miss America contestants will help support social causes throughout the year.

"We look forward to sponsoring their important role as the world's leading provider of scholarships for young women," MacDonald said.

Sugar-Free Gum and Snacks Can be Deadly for Pets

Most pet owners know that chocolate is a big no-no for dogs. But here's something to chew on: a common ingredient in sugarless gum and snacks can cause a canine catastrophe.

The culprit is a sweetener called xylitol. While you may never have heard of it, there's a good chance you have it in your house. Xylitol is common in sugarless gum and in sugar-free snacks, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Cases of xylitol poisoning in dogs have increased in recent years as the sweetener has been added to lots of new foods, Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, vice president of the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, told Paw Nation. "There definitely has been an increase in the exposures of dogs to xylitol over the last several years, simply because there's more xylitol out there."

The chemical is completely safe for humans and most other animals, but in dogs, xylitol causes blood sugar levels to plummet. When blood sugar drops, Gwaltney-Brant says, "the brain isn't getting enough energy to do its job." After swallowing xylitol, dogs may vomit and become lethargic and disoriented. "If blood sugar drops low enough, they can have seizures," Gwaltney-Brant says. Without treatment, dogs can die.

That's not all. Dogs that eat a lot of xylitol can also suffer from liver damage. Researchers aren't sure what causes the liver problems, Gwaltney-Brant says, but the results can be grave.

A little xylitol goes a long way. Just two sticks of sugarless gum can be fatal for a 20-pound dog, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune, and a single sugar-free pudding cup can spell trouble for a 90-pound pooch. But those numbers can be misleading, Gwaltney-Brant cautions. Some brands of gum or candy contain no xylitol, while others contain relatively large amounts. Even within a single brand, the level of xylitol can vary from flavor to flavor and batch to batch, she says.

If you know or suspect your dog has gotten into foods that might contain xylitol, take him to the vet immediately, Gwaltney-Brant says. Problems from blood sugar levels dropping can occur quickly -- "often within 30 minutes to an hour," she notes. Vets can monitor blood sugar levels and start treatment to get blood sugar back up to safe levels.

If you're a fan of sugar-free products, check the labels to see whether they contain xylitol. And it should go without saying that you should do your best to keep Fido away from your gum. He can't blow bubbles anyway.

Filene's Basement will reopen an auction today to sell itself to the highest bidder after prematurely declaring a Men's Wearhouse affiliate the winner on Sunday.

Filene's Basement, operating under bankruptcy court protection, held an auction last week and announced a winning bid of $67 million.

But bidders Crown FB and Syms accused Men's Wearhouse of not meeting auction requirements. A judge directed Filene's on Wednesday to reopen the process.

The agreement is expected to preserve jobs for the vast majority of Filene's 1,600-plus employees, said Scott Rusczyk, president of FB Acquisition II, in a statement. That company is the Buxbaum Group affiliate that acquired Filene's Basement from Columbus-based Retail Ventures on April 20 and then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 4. Company's earnings outlook for '09 below analysts prediction; shares fall in after-hours trading

Columbus-based footwear retailer DSW Inc. today announced first quarter profits fell to $7.1 million, or 16 cents per share, from $10.3 million, or 23 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose to $385.8 million from $366.3 million last year. Same store sales decreased 4.7 percent during the quarted that ended May 2.

The report beat the expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet Research, who estimated a quarterly profit of 14 cents a share on revenue of $379.5 million.

The company estimates earnings for 2009 will be approximately 30 to 35 cents per share, while analysts estimated the figure at 46 cents a share.

The earnings report was issued after the market closed. Shares of DSW closed normal trading at $12.97 but fell 14.7 percent to $11.07 in after-hours trading

Filene's Basement workers were warned today that they could be laid off starting as early as June 15 as the company's owners pursue an agreement to sell the company.

The company filed a notice with the state this week that says all 1,664 workers could be affected but noted the buyer could hire some or all of them back should it decide to continue operating the stores.

If only part of Filene's Basement's stores are sold, only some of the workers could lose their jobs next month, the company said in a letter to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The rest would remain employed "for a brief period" as Filene's winds down operations at any remaining stores. The letter indicated the second wave of layoffs could begin July 17.

"We hope to provide additional information on or about June 10, 2009, when the Bankruptcy Court hearing on the approval of any proposed sale is currently set to occur," the company said in its letter.

In Ohio, 105 are employed at the Filene's store located at 3704 W. Dublin-Granville Rd. and 43 at the Warrensville Heights store, the letter said.

Filene's Basement had been owned by Columbus-based Retail Ventures Inc., until this spring, when it was turned over to a California liquidator, Buxbaum Holdings Inc.

Early this month, Filene's filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Bids to buy the assets of Filene's Basement are due June 3 and an auction for the chain will be held June 5, the The Boston Globe reported this week, based on a filing in the U.S. District Court of Delaware.

Filene's Basement already has one bidder for part of the business. New York real estate firms Crown Acquisitions and Chetrit Group jointly have expressed interest in buying 17 of the 26 stores. It was not immediately known whether the Ohio stores are part of the 17.

WILMINGTON, Del.—Discount retailer Filene’s Basement says it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, less than two weeks after its new owner said it was reviewing “all available options.“

The privately held company also reached a deal that will allow a Crown Acquisitions affiliate to buy 17 of its 25 stores, including its flagship locations in Boston and New York. The agreement is subject to a bankruptcy court auction, which is expected in about five weeks.

Buxbaum Group, a California-based liquidator, acquired Filene’s last month through an affiliate company, FB II Acquisition Corp. The sale came after the previous owner, Columbus, Ohio-based Retail Ventures Inc., said the chain was experiencing “significant liquidity problems.“

BOSTON (AP) - Boston area discount retailer Filene's Basement has been sold to a California-based liquidator.

Retail Ventures Inc., the 25-store chain's owner, sold the chain on Tuesday to Buxbaum Group of Agoura Hills, Calif.

Columbus, Ohio-based Retail Ventures said it "will not realize any proceeds" from the deal, adding that Filene's Basement has "experienced significant liquidity problems" recently.

Although the future of the chain is "uncertain," a spokeswoman says the stores will remain open for now.

Buxbaum officials refused comment.

The store, famous for its "Running of the Brides" wedding gown sale, was founded more than a century ago in downtown Boston as a place for the Filene's department store to sell excess merchandise.

New York – As the stalled economy makes it harder even for some off-price retailers to compete, Filene’s Basement is in the midst of critical discussions with the vendor community.


Attorney Lawrence Gottlieb of Cooley Godward Kronish LLP confirmed to HTT that the firm is representing an ad hoc committee of creditors of Filene’s Basement. “Mainly vendors,” said Gottlieb, adding that the group “will include some landlords” as well. He stressed the ad hoc nature of the committee, noting that the retailer has not made any indications, positive or negative, concerning any potential bankruptcy filing.


Additionally, the unsecured creditors retained the firm of Loughlin Meghji + Co., a boutique restructuring firm, as financial advisor, said Ken Simon, managing director at Loughlin Meghji.


Neither Gottlieb nor Simon would comment on any schedule or timetable


The retailer ended 2008 with 36 stores – but in January started closeout sales in 11 stores and shut them down by the end of February. At the time, Filene’s Basement told HTT it had sought “solutions such as fair rent reductions” on those 11 units but had not obtained “sufficient relief.”


Parent company Retail Ventures Inc. (RVI) reported that for the year ended Jan. 31, Filene’s Basement had sales of $422.1 million, down 9.5% from the prior year. Comps fell 2.6%. RVI had total sales $1.89 billion.
