COLUMBUS, Ohio —Flu typically hits in January and February—and one option for decreasing your symptoms doesn’t seem to be working very well.

The prevalent strain of flue is not resistant to the flu shot and doctors said that even if you haven’t received one, you still can through the first part of March because the virus hasn’t really shown up much yet, NBC 4‘s Mikaela Hunt reported.

Dr. Randy Wexler is part of a family practice associated with the Ohio State University Medical Center.

He said that although his office hasn’t seen many flu patients, you’ll know when you get it.

“People feel like a truck ran over them. Their hair hurts, their sheets hurt. Everything hurts,“ he said.

Many people may go to their doctor asking for Tamiflu—a prescription that may help get rid of flu symptoms quickly.

But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that the prevalent strain of flu is not responding well to Tamiflu.

But, Dr. Wexler said there is no way to tell if it will help your personal battle with the virus, so he will still write prescriptions for Tamiflu.

COLUMBUS, OH = Businesses, Schools Prep For Snow, Arctic Blast

CENTRAL OHIO—As snow fell Tuesday, Central Ohio residents prepared for an arctic blast later in the week.

Tuesday’s snowfall was familiar for residents in Knox County, where Storm Team 4 meteorologist Jym Ganahl predicted blizzard-like conditions Wednesday.

The area saw about 4 inches of snowfall over the past week and residents are eyeing the temperatures, wind and forecast, NBC 4‘s Marcus Thorpe reported.

Five trucks within the city of Mount Vernon will be spreading a 50/50 mix of salt and grit during 12-hour shifts.

The forecasted snowfall has not made area small business owners happy. They said diminished foot traffic and slumping sales is a recipe for more tough times.

Conversely, the weather is helping local hardware stores. The Do It Best shop in Centerburg ran out of rock salt and the push for shovels, scrapers, sand and other wintry items is only expected to increase in the coming days.

Businesses aren’t the only ones preparing for the wintry weather. School districts around Central Ohio are preparing families for a snow day. Wind chills are expected to be below zero, making it dangerous for students to stand outside and wait for their school bus or walk to school.

South-Western City Schools officials told NBC 4‘s Candice Lee that calling off school due to snow or cold temperatures begins at 2 a.m.

A team of administrators including the superintendent hit the roads looking at road conditions, snow levels, ice, and the wind chill.

“We have urban areas, we have suburban areas and we have rural areas. So the snow clearance in each of those areas is different as are the icy conditions, the wind conditions,“ said Sandy Nekoloff, of South-Western City Schools.

They also make sure buses will start and are able to pick up the 14,000 students that transport them to school.

Columbus City Schools spokesperson Jeff Warner said there is no state law mandating school cancellations and the decision is solely at the discretion of the superintendent. New Albany, Dublin and Westerville schools had similar policies to South-Western City Schools, but only Westerville City Schools has a statement concerning wind chills.

In a November letter to parents, Superintendent Dr. J. Daniel good explained that wind chills at or below -15 degrees during key walking and waiting-for-bus times are given special consideration.

Cancer update- a huge amt. of info. here!]

READ THIS!!!

Everything below is very true except that distilled water has neutral PH which means it is not acidic.

*Subject:* Fw: Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins

**AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO
TRY (TRY THE KEY WORD) AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS
FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY. (A
PREVENTIVE WAY)**

**Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins *****

**1. Every person has ****cancer cells** in the body. These ****cancer cells** do not show up in the standard **** **Tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the ****cancer cells** because they have not reached the detectable size. ****

**2. ****Cancer cells** occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime ****

**3. When the person's immune system is strong the ****cancer cells** will be destroyed and prevented******From multiplying and forming tumors. ****

**4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These ****
**Could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors. ****

**5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.****

**6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing ****cancer cells** and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc., and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.****

**7. Radiation while destroying ****cancer cells** also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. ****

**8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction. ****

**9 When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. ****

**10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause ****cancer cells** tomutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause ****cancer cells** to spread to other sites. ****

**11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the ****cancer cells** by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply. **** CANCER CELLS** FEED ON:****

**a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the ***cancer cells**. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Splenda, Spoonful, etc. are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be raw honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or Celtic sea salt. ***

**b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in thegastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with raw milk ****cancer cells** are being starved. ****

c**. ****Cancer cells** thrive in an acid environment. Ameat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and alittle chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which areall harmful, especially to people with cancer. ****

**d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for bui lding healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). ******

**e. Avoid coffee, tea, and processed chocolate, which have highcaffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. Drink 8 or more glasses of water a day to help flush out the ******cancer cells**.*****

**12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup. ****

**13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of ****cancer cells** and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the ****cancer cells**. ****

**14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy ****cancer cells**. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell d eath, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.****

**15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful an d acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. ****

**16. ****Cancer cells** cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy ****cancer cells**. ****

**(PLEASE FORWARD IT TO PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT) ****

**CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL, U S - PLEASE READ****

**1. No plastic containers in micro. ****

**2. No water bottles in freezer. ****

**3. No plastic wrap in microwave.****

Johns Hopkins** has recently sent this out in its newsletters.
This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well

*
**Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. ****
**Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.***

**Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. ***

**Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. *****

**This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the
container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper . The dioxin problem is one of the reasons. ***

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

**This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life.*****

Two Wolves

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people. He said, 'My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.'

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: 'Which wolf wins?'

The old Cherokee simply replied, 'The one you feed.'

Difference between: http & https

I know you all might know this, but I didn't and was glad to find it out.

FIRST, MANY PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF **The main difference between http:// and https:// is It's all about keeping you secure**
HTTP stands for HyperText Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients. The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS.
The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure". If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.
This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.
This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website!
But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.
You understand why this is so important, right?
If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://. If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number.
PASS IT ON (You may save someone a lot of grief).

Mount Carmel announces 300 job cuts Some layoffs included in cuts

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/01/13/mount_carmel_web.html?sid=101

Tuesday, January 13, 2009 2:29 PM
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Mount Carmel Health System said it will eliminate 300 positions from its payroll. The cuts include an unspecified number of layoffs.

Claus von Zychlin, the hospital system's chief executive officer, called the cuts "painful" and blamed the bad economy.

"There's never a good way to do this," he said. "We're trying to be as good a citizen-partner as we can."

The jobs will be cut through attrition; consolidating some services that are currently offered its four Mount Carmel hospitals; transferring workers from the hospital to separate for-profit, joint ventures; and layoffs.

None of the targeted positions will affect patient care and come at all levels of the hospital system, including eliminating some management positions.

Von Zychlin would not give a break down of the affected jobs - where they are in the health system or how many workers will be unemployed by the end of February.

Affected employees were told in person beginning yesterday.

Healthcare had been seen as a recession-proof industry, but as the economy worsens, hospitals have seen a dip in patient volume as people put off elective procedures to save money.

And as more people lose their jobs across the workforce, the hospital charity care and bad debt are increasing.

"We don't have a count, but we definitely do know that there are a number of hospitals that are feeling the effects of the economic downturn," said Caroline Steinberg, vice president for trends analysis at the American Hospital Association.

"And some have ended up having to do staff layoffs."

Mount Carmel's decision to make cuts comes after hospital leaders reduced spending in other areas, including travel, supplies and vendor contracts.

Despite today's announcement, the 8,800-employee health system is financially sound, von Zychlin said. He expects the economy to get worse before it gets better.

"This is also more about what we see coming down the pike and there's nothing derailing this process in the next year, two years," he said. "The general economy has not hit rock (bottom) yet."

The health system operates four hospitals - Mount Carmel West and Mount Carmel East, both in Columbus; Mount Carmel St. Ann's, in Westerville; and the Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital in New Albany - as well as numerous outpatient facilities, urgent-care centers and medical offices.

A few things I learned today after a call with VC HR

The company has filed the Bankruptcy suit and there is NO money left!

Therefore;

VSP plans were canceled (1-01-09) due to the contract being up in Dec. 08 and will not be renewed.

Caremark Drug Plans - are said to be only filling 30 day supplies of medicine not 90 days since the company will now longer exist past 1-31-09. If you get denied for a 90 day refill call the 800#, they should be able to fill a 30 day supply of the prescription.
**Note: If you have a medication that normal cost is (ex) 250.00 a month and your co-pay is only $40.00 (ex) a month, the other 210.00 normally was paid by VC. Since VC has NO money and will be done by 1-31-09, they will not cover beyond a 30 day supply. I always thought it was some sort of discount with Caremark, was not aware VC paid the difference.

Medical Insurance - At this time (Cobra coverage) is expected to be over by 1-31-09. Again since the company has NO money the coverage will not go on. With this in mind ALL claims need to be submitted to the Insurance company before 1-31-09 or you will be financially responsible for the entire bill. For Example, doctor visits, testing, surgeries, etc. Please make sure if you are using a service that you let them know to bill the charges before 1-31-09. All claims after that will be out of you pocket cost since VC will not be around.

W2's - each person situation is different.. You will be taxed on any expense the company supplied to you. For example; rental living, apartments, company cars, relo packages, bonuses, etc) This may be what your 2nd W2 is reporting.

Those eligible to participate in the Bankruptcy suit are only those that are still owed $, (Vac, PTO, severance, etc). If this is you, wait for the information from the Bankruptcy suit to be mailed to you to fill out and send in. I am being told not to enter info on the EPIC site and the form that you will receive both or it will cause yours to be kicked out and will take long to process.

Anyone who was let go prior to the Oct 08 round and is not owed any $ does not need to fill out Bankruptcy forms. You are not apart of the suit.

VC Corporate HR Dept has a few people there till the end of this month to answer questions. I do not have the correct contact number for them at this time. After 1-31-09 there will be a recording on the voice mail directing you to who will be handling questions and issues from that point on.

Please note:

I am not providing legal assistance or directions pertaining to any of the information sent out.
This is only information I have learned and I am sharing to help others get answers.
If you are unsure of your situation please contact the HR dept for further assistance.

25 Best Jobs of 2009

Unfortunately, not many people are a stranger to the downward spiraling economy that began in December 2007 and continued to deplete throughout 2008.

In fact, November 2008 marked some of worst numbers in decades in terms of job loss: The unemployment rate, for example, hit a 14-year high this November at a rate of 6.7 percent. That month also counted 1.9 million jobs lost throughout 2008 alone; two-thirds of those losses occurred in the last three months. The number of unemployed persons increased from 10.1 million in October to 10.3 million people in November, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Since 2007, the number of unemployed persons has increased by 3.1 million, and the unemployment rate has gone up by 2 percent. For the 10.3 million currently unemployed people, however, there is hope for some reprieve in 2009.

The labor force is expected to increase by 12.8 million workers over the 2006 -2016 period, according to the BLS. Total employment is expected to increase by 10 percent to 166.2 million over that period as well, while an estimated 15.6 million jobs will be added by 2016. While that year seems like a long way off today, a certain number of new jobs will be added each year leading up to 2016 -- including in 2009.

It should be noted, however, that the jobs that will be added won't be evenly distributed across industries and occupational groups. It goes without saying that changes in consumer demand, technology and the like will continue to affect the economic structure.

Industries that have seen growth since 2007 (according to the most recent data from the BLS) include management, business and financial operations; professional and related occupations; service occupations; sales and office occupations; and installation, maintenance and repair occupations.
