Gas Pumps
Thanks to Cinda for passing this info on.. This email was sent to me by a friend whose cousin is the Lewiston fire captain. This is true.. It happened to them three weeks ago somewhere in Lewiston on our way to Augusta . The pump should have totaled @ $38.00 (and change). When the receipt was printed, and she checked it was $ 47.00 (and change). She got mad, went inside the store, asked for a calculator and let them do the math. They refunded her. she told them that if they cheat, they had better make it right. Normally, her husband would skip printing the receipt.. Not her. We saw on the news the other night that this is happening everywhere. Brian pumped exactly one gallon of gas. The price did not match the cost of one gallon. It was higher. He went inside and complained, got a refund. There is also a number on each pump that you can call and complain.. This is a true story, so read it carefully. On March 24, 2009, I stopped at a gas station in Lewiston . My truck's gas gauge was on 1/4 of a tank. I use the mid-grade, which was priced at $2.21 per gallon. When my tank is at this point, it takes somewhere around 14 gallons to fill it up. When the pump showed 14 gallons had been pumped, I began to slow it down. Then, to my surprise, it went to 15, then 16. I even looked under my truck to see if it was being spilled. It was not. Then it showed 17 gallons on the pump. It stopped at 18 gallons. This was very strange to me, since my truck has only an 18 gallon tank. I went on my way a little confused, then on the evening news I heard a report that 1 out of 4 gas stations had calibrated their pumps to show more gas had been pumped than a person actually got. Here is how to check a pump to see if you are getting the right amount: Whichever grade you are using, put EXACTLY 10 GALLONS in your tank, then look at the dollar amount. If the dollar amount is not EXACTLY 10 times the price of the fuel you have chosen, then the pumps are rigged. In my case, as I said, the mid-grade was $2.21 9/10 per gallon; my dollar amount for 10 gallons should have been $22.19. I wish I had checked the pump. It doesn't matter where you pump gas, please check the 10 gallon price. If you do find a station that is cheating, contact the state Agriculture Department, and direct your comments to the Comssioner, the info is on the gas pumps. Please don't delete this until you have sent it to all people in your address book. We need to put a stop to this outrageous cheating of customers. The gas companies are making enough profits at honest rates. |

Start with healthy decisions
The end of summer and the return to school/work activities
can be stressful. Rather than fall into unhealthy habits,
greet autumn with a positive focus on your health.
Manage stress
• Find ways to de-stress by exercising or simply finding
time to relax
• Participate in outdoor activities such as playing catch
with your child or apple picking at a local orchard
• Make sure to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night, as
recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). Your children need even more sleep than
that. Not getting enough sleep is associated with a number
of chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular
disease, obesity, and depression¹
Eat healthier
• Eat more fruits and vegetables
• Limit alcohol intake and drink more water
• Watch your caloric intake and diet
Get regular exams
• Schedule physical exams for you and your family members
• Make sure you and your family are up-to-date on
necessary, preventive checkups for the detection of certain
diseases (eg, mammography, Pap smear, prostate cancer
test, and cholesterol or diabetes screenings)
• Get appropriate vaccinations, including flu shots
Check your medicines
• Organize your medicine chest and check expiration dates
• Plan ahead for the medicines or prescription refills you
may need (eg, seasonal allergy medications)
• Determine if you and your family members are eligible

Columbus City Schools Lists Buildings That Could Close
Empty Schools
CCS releases a preliminary list of schools that could close, and NBC 4 explains the process.
NBC 4
Columbus City Schools officials release a preliminary list of schools that could be on the chopping block.
Buzz
NBC 4 got answers on where the process stands.
The six schools would be cut based on factors such as student enrollment, safety, access and diversity.
A committee released a preliminary list of schools, elementary and middle, that could be on the chopping block Monday: Clinton Middle School
- Medina Middle School
- Beery Middle School
- Buckeye Middle School
- Eastmoor Middle School
- Johnson Park Middle School
- Sherwood Middle School
- Indianola Middle School
- Franklin Alternative School
- Monroe Alternative School
- Deshler Elementary School
- Heyl Elementary School
- Moler Elementary School
- Literature Based Alternative School at Hubbard
- Douglas Alternative Elementary School
- Fair Elementary School
- Parkmoor Elementary School
Parkmoor Elementary is a convenient walk for Elieen Hanna’s son.
“I’m disappointed. There’s a lot of kids at that school. It’s always packed. I’d be surprised that they would shut it down, Hanna said.
“I don’t know what school they’d even consider sending him to. I never thought this would happen,” she said.
Clinton Middle School also is on the list and is near Greg Zimmerman’s home.
“It seems like there’s still quite a few kids that go there. I would think it’s still in need right now. It’s not that old of a facility. I’ve been in it, and it seems like the upkeeps pretty decent,” he said.
Zimmerman said he worries what will happen to the building if were to close.
A district spokesperson said the district hasn’t decided what it will do with the empty schools.
The district spokesperson said community meetings will be held in November to gain input from residents on why certain schools should stay open or be closed.
Superintendent Gene Harris was to draft the final list of at least six schools, and the board was to vote on the list in December.
A district spokesperson said the schools won’t be shut down until next school year to ensure the least amount of academic interruptions.

County Bans Behind-The-Wheel Texting
Published: October 20, 2009
AKRON, Ohio—The county that includes Akron has become the latest area in Ohio to ban text messaging while driving.
The measure approved by the Summit County Council on Monday carries $150 fines for violators caught reading or sending text messages from behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.
It’s the first countywide texting ban in Ohio. It was proposed by County Councilman Jon Poda, who says the law will save lives and make roads safer.
The city of Cleveland has a similar ban, and proposals before the Ohio Legislature would ban texting while driving statewide.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 18 states already have laws on the books against texting while you drive.

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary..

Day 983 of my captivity...
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.
Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously an imbecile.
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.
For now................

US Airways said flying from its hubs -- Philadelphia, Phoenix and Charlotte, N.C., as well as Washington -- has been profitable. Once the changes are made, 99 percent of its flying will be to or from those cities, up from 93 percent. The airline expects its domestic flying will drop slightly next year, while international flying will rise. |
Check out 'Cash for Appliances' program starts this spring
'Cash for Appliances' program starts this spring
Filed under: Home, Green, Economizer

This is part of the federal government's economic stimulus plan -- it set aside $300 million in rebates for buying energy-efficient products, and state governments had to send detailed plans to Washington by earlier this month to explain how they would give that money away. So unlike Cash for Clunkers, each state is in charge of its own Cash for Appliances program.
California, for example, will focus on rebates for just three standard appliances. It will give $100 for the purchase of an Energy Star-approved clothes washer, $75 for a refrigerator and $50 for a room air-conditioner. Those rebates are in addition to any additional rebates offered by the state utility company supplying your electricity and the appliance manufacturer you buy from. The program is supposed to start in early spring.
New York is doing the program in February, offering $75 for refrigerators and washers, $50 for freezers. Florida announced April 16 to 25 as the time for residents to get rebates, offered in the form of 20% off the pre-tax sales price, up to $1,500, on new energy-efficient appliances.
One downside: Unlike cars, there's no lot you can wheel your clunker appliance to. New York is one state that's giving an incentive for recycling appliances by adding extra to your rebate amount if you show proof you recycled the freezer of fridge. But residents have the extra burden of finding out what they need to do with their old appliance before they can cash in on the new one.
To get the date and details of your state's own program, contact your state's energy department.
And act fast. That $300 million the Feds set aside goes pretty fast when divided among 56 states and territories. California only gets $35.2 million for its massive population, so it definitely pays to be first in line at the appliance store.
Check out Wexner: 'Mojo' is back at Limited | The Columbus Dispatch
Wexner: 'Mojo' is back at Limited CEO, executives cite cutbacks, efficiencies Wednesday, October 28, 2009 3:12 AM By Tim Feran
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH After battling a terrible economy for the past year, Limited Brands thinks that better times are ahead. "It feels to me kind of like we've got our mojo back," said Leslie H. Wexner, chairman and CEO, in an investor conference at company headquarters yesterday. The retailer, whose biggest chains are Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works, has stores that are "brimming with emotional content," Wexner said. "We look better than we've looked in years. I'm optimistic about the Christmas season." The view is completely different from that of a year ago. Last year at this time, it seemed "like we were in an elevator, and we were accelerating down," Wexner said. "It began to feel in November, December, January like someone cut the cable. It was really the pits." The company answered the recession's free fall partly by getting "very buttoned up financially," Wexner said. That meant cutting expenses, said Stuart Burgdoerfer, chief financial officer. "We've taken out $350 million (in expenses) since the summer of 2007," he said. Part of that cut came via a reduction in employees, with layoffs of 500 workers in the home office in 2007 and another round of 400 layoffs in 2009. It also meant reductions in discretionary expenses. In addition, "the fierce urgency of now" became something of a mantra among management, as the company redoubled its efforts to become "faster, more efficient and more agile," Wexner said. At Victoria's Secret, for instance, CEO Sharen Turney said the effort is on to speed up delivery of dominant lingerie products. "Victoria's Secret taught the world how to make bras," she said. "The carmakers can change the color on their production line in 15 minutes. Well, why can't we?" By responding more quickly to customer demand, the company is able to shorten the time between creation of a product and its delivery to stores, thus allowing the company to keep inventory levels low. When products remain on shelves, the company is forced to slash prices to move the merchandise and make way for the next season's goods. That happened last year to many retailers. Limited Brands expects a percentage decline in comparable-store sales in the low to mid-single digits, compared with its previous estimate of roughly flat sales. The company ascribed the drop in sales to a lack of promotion and doesn't anticipate cutting prices on merchandise, Burgdoerfer said. "We're on the path to 15 percent profit margin by 2012," he said. "We want to build toward that model." That profit margin will be mainly from domestic sales, even though the company is putting effort on international sales, "an area of accelerating growth," said Martin Waters, executive vice president of International Limited Brands. "The golden goose is North America," Wexner said. "We don't want to go into the dark hole of being successful" abroad and losing track of business at home. Limited Brands yesterday raised its outlook for third-quarter earnings per share. The company expects it to be between flat and a loss of 4 cents. Its previous estimate was a loss of 7 cents to 12 cents. Wexner anticipates that the economy will continue to meander for a year or two. "I don't believe we are seeing the end of the world," he said. But the company does believe that the world -- and retail in particular -- "is going to get faster." "As my father said, the business is kind of like pool," Wexner said. "You have to be in the position for the next shot." |
