Bankruptcy forces end of Value City in its hometown

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The central Ohio stores of the bankrupt Value City Department Stores chain planned to close their doors for good after business yesterday following more than a month of liquidation sales.

The remaining Columbus stores, on Westerville Road on the North Side and on North Boulevard on the West Side, ended business by offering discounts that they said were up to 95 percent off in the final two days. A store associate at the Kettering store in the Dayton area said that yesterday also was its last day.

A representative at Value City's Columbus headquarters did not return calls seeking comment on the status of the rest of the stores. Since filing for bankruptcy in October, the company has declined to provide specifics about when stores would close and whether all of them would cease operations. According to the Value City Web site yesterday, there were 38 remaining locations, down from more than 100 a year ago.

In documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York on Friday, Value City said it was rejecting the leases of about 30 stores as of the end of this week. In a number of cases, Schottenstein Stores Corp. is listed as the landlord or manager of the property.

The Value City chain grew out of the original Schottenstein's store in Columbus. It was spun off from privately held Schottenstein Stores to become part of Retail Ventures as the chain grew. Retail Ventures paid a group of private-equity firms to take the struggling discounter off its hands in January.

Value City Furniture is a separate entity controlled by Schottenstein's Chief Executive Jay Schottenstein. It is not affected by the bankruptcy.
