OSU marching band, at Picnic With the Pops

Old friends and old favorites -- and, in some cases, old old favorites -- are among the summertime highlights planned for central Ohio.

Call them retro or classic: The big events in entertainment and the arts have a distinctly familiar flavor.

After canceling Picnic With the Pops last year, the Columbus Symphony will revive its popular series in June on the Chemical Abstracts Service lawn.

The magnificent glass sculptures of Dale Chihuly -- a regular part of the landscape at Franklin Park Conservatory -- will settle in again for an exhibit to open in July. Mamma Mia! (with ABBA music from the '70s and '80s) and A Chorus Line (with roots on Broadway in the '70s and '80s) will punctuate offerings in the Broadway Across America series.

And the roster of tried-and-true pop stars (assembled from youngest to oldest) who should attract fans to venues indoors and out will include Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, Keith Urban, Peter Frampton, Billy Joel, Steve Winwood, Elton John and Eric Clapton.

More returnees: literary picnics, quilt shows, Shakespeare in the park, outdoor Wexner Center for the Arts movies and festivals -- arts, jazz, rose, tomato, Greek, Irish, Italian and Latino. Today, Arts & Life previews month by month the high points of summer in the city.
