COLUMBUS, Ohio—With the passage of House Bill 1, Ohio’s budget bill, several changes will take place affecting new teachers.
Those who wish to become teachers and have advanced degrees and training will have new levels and classifications in 2010.
Another year will be added to mentoring programs, making it a two-year program.
Teacher applicants will have to undergo background checks by the FBI.
It will take teachers seven years to qualify for tenure under the new rules.
Licensed teachers can also be fired for “good and just cause” if they are deemed to be performing below expectations.
Upper Arlington teacher Sabrina Walters says she welcomes the additional year for the mentoring program.
She thinks the more time learning in a classroom setting, the better.
Sally Oldham, VP of the Columbus Education Association, says every child deserves a high-qualified teacher in the classroom and that the right people should be in the right jobs.
