They will close early, at 6 p.m., on Wednesday. • There will be no trash collection in Columbus. The trash-color collection schedule will rotate one weekday forward until the next holiday, which is Christmas Day. • There will be no Rumpke curbside recycling or yard-waste subscription collection. Collection moves one day forward (Friday will be collected Saturday), then returns to its normal day the following week. • Columbus Public Schools and most other districts will be closed. • Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College won't hold classes. |

Ohio's unemployment rate rose to 10.5 percent in October from 10.1 percent the month before, but, curiously, the state's job count rose by 1,400, Ohio officials said yesterday.
That is the reverse of the trend set by the past two months in which the jobless rate and the state's nonfarm job total both decreased, a pattern that had economists scratching their heads.
One explanation for the October increases is that the previous unemployment rate had been skewed by the large number of workers who had given up their search. That removed them from the state's tally of the labor force and helped push down the rate.
Last month's numbers represent a return to some semblance of normal, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, with the unemployment rate reflecting the actual state of the job market better than it has in recent months.
"This is why we didn't get overly excited when the rates started to drop," said Brian Harter, spokesman for the agency.
His best guess is that the jobless rate will begin a sustainable, long-term decline sometime next spring or summer.
The national unemployment rate was 10.2 percent in October, up from 9.8 percent the previous month. The state and national figures are both adjusted to account for seasonal jobs.
In Ohio, the number of unemployed workers was 618,000, up 24,000 from the previous month.
The fastest-growing sector was professional and business services, up 6,800 jobs, followed by trade, transportation and utilities, up 1,900 jobs.
On the other end, financial activities had the greatest losses, down 2,200 jobs.
Notably, durable-goods manufacturing gained 400 jobs. This is a sign that factories might be ramping up after a prolonged run of job losses and plant closings.
The number of nonfarm jobs in the state totals 5.1 million.

1. Dress appropriately.
Sure, you want to show off your new 3-inch heels, but unless you're going clubbing on Black Friday, leave the stilettos at home. Instead, opt for comfortable flats that will bring you through the long haul -- after all, this day is not for the faint at heel!
2. Preparation is key!
Your boy scout son is nodding his head right about now. Stash a few granola bars, antibacterial soap, baby wipes, Band Aids, and whatever else you might need for any miscellaneous mishaps that may occur along the way (Diet Coke? Flask? Taser?). The last thing you want to do on your way to scoring a $5 microwave is stop for a snack break.
3. Scout the scene.
Check out any unfamiliar stores a few days before Thanksgiving so you can make a beeline to the items you're coveting. Talk to sales associates to find out where special door busters will be placed. Strategy is everything.
4. Know your sales.
Bring sale ads with you for clarification and extra in-store coupons, or in case you hit an extra grouchy associate that you'll need to defend yourself against. Many stores will price-match, but you can't get the deal without the coupon!
5. Be fierce.
Black Friday is the Olympics of shopping. Leave uninterested spouses or slowpoke children at home and bring teenagers who can run fast and aren't afraid of a good bribe.
6. Park it.
Never waste time circling a parking lot four times to get a spot by the door; it only wastes time. Instead, park in the first spot you see and walk off all that turkey you ate the day before!
7. Calm down.
The term "door busters" isn't meant to be literal, so let's all band together to experience a stampede-free Black Friday. After all, a $10 DVD player isn't worth a $900 dollar ER visit.
8. Divide and Conquer.
Bring a few (fast!) friends and find out what their needs are. By shopping together, you can hit different areas of the store and meet back at the checkout faster than you can say "Black Friday."
9. Focus.
Shop only your advertised necessities that you've prepared for. Each moment you spend picking out regular-priced underwear will lessen your chance of scoring that $50 computer.

Stress hormone can interfere with total recall
Ever flubbed a job interview, suffered a memory lapse during a presentation, or forgotten the boss's husband's name at the company picnic? Stress hormones may chemically block the ability to recall some information--just when you need it most.
Researchers asked 36 people to memorize a list of 60 nouns, then tested how much they could recall that same day and again 24 hours later. To simulate the effects of the stress hormone cortisol, participants received a cortisone pill or a placebo at one of three times: before seeing the list, immediately after seeing it, or 1 hour before they were to recall it. (Cortisone is used by the body in the production of cortisol.)
Those given the cortisone 1 hour before they had to recall the list had the faultiest memories (Nature Neuroscience, Apr 2000).
If you're faced with a stressful event that requires you to call on your memory, stop cortisol confusion with these strategies:
Practice, practice, practice. If you can't rely on notes, "try rehearsing the information extensively," says study author James McGaugh, PhD, director of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory and professor of neurobiology and behavior at the University of California, Irvine. "The better the preparation, the stronger the memory," he says.
Sip a cup of tea or java. Animal studies suggest that moderate amounts of caffeine may enhance long-term memory when taken shortly after learning.
Review at the last minute. In the study, memories weren't affected by cortisone on same-day tests. It's likely that the "freshness" of the memory overcame the stress.
Take a deep breath--or two. Try to relax. A short stroll, a friendly conversation, or deep breathing before the big event could help keep stress hormones in check, Dr. McGaugh advises.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, some still struggle with finding where their next meal will come from.
Local food pantries said their numbers served have increased since June, and many of the families or individuals are new clients.
Volunteers of America teamed with many local groups Monday to bring in more than 200 turkeys, pies, and bread in preparation for the more than 2,500 meals to be served in Columbus for Thanksgiving.
Local pantries still need donations. In Clintonville, the Beechwold Community Resource Center is trying to collect turkeys to hand out to local families.

WASHINGTON—A tax break designed to put more money in your pocket could end up costing you.
President Barack Obama’s Making Work Pay tax break was part of the stimulus package enacted back in February. The tax break was designed to help consumers spend the U.S. economy out of recession.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS on what you need to know.
The tax break increased paychecks for 95 percent of working families, but an IRS mistake means more than 15 million taxpayers could owe the government $250 or more.
Experts said the IRS made mistakes in the new tax withholding tables.
The U.S. Treasury Department said the affected groups include:
- Individuals with more than one job.
- Married couples in which both spouses work.
- Employees claimed as dependents on their parents’ tax return.
- Social Security recipients who also earn taxable wages.
Expect either a smaller refund check or to owe the government, Floyd Business Consulting CPA Jeff Ballmer said.
“The best thing to do would be go to the IRS and check out their tax withholding calculator and figure out where you sit,“ Ballmer said.
The tax credit is good through 2010.
Ballmer says be prepared for next year by increasing your tax withholding on your W-4 form.
“Claim less exemptions. If you typically claim two, lower it down to one or zero. Or, you could also make quarterly estimate tax payments where you just write a check to the government to cover any tax you might owe,“ Ballmer said.
If you’re really worried about your withholding for this year, Ballmer said there’s still enough time to adjust for your December paychecks.
