CENTRAL OHIO—More money for those on unemployment will become available, but there could be delays. What do the new extensions mean, and when will you see a check?

NBC 4 viewers have been asking for help after they’ve experienced problems with unemployment benefits. Mike Bowersock got answers from the Ohio Department of Jobs & Family Services.

It’s a confusing formula, but basically, the fewer extensions you’ve had, the more money you’ll receive.

Growing joblessness in Ohio makes a federal extension of unemployment benefits important.

While it depends on when a worker got laid off and what tier he/she falls in, generally, there will be another 20 weeks of unemployment if his/her unemployment runs out by Saturday, Dec. 19.

If the worker has never had an extension of benefits, that is.

If benefits run out Saturday, Dec. 26, the eligibility drops to 14 weeks.

If benefits don’t run out until January, there will be no extensions.

If someone already has had extensions, the amount of time available for another extension will be less.

Anyone who’s had more than three extensions is not eligible for any more.

Some of the extensions were paid over Thanksgiving. Others have been delayed up to two weeks but will be retroactive.

Those getting the most number of weeks of additional unemployment are unemployed workers who have exhausted all 26 weeks of unemployment by Saturday, Dec. 19, and haven’t had an extension.
