Text-Only 'Facebook Zero' Coming Soon to Simple Phones

In an e-mail to TechCrunch, Facebook spokesperson Brandee Barker described the new service as "a lightweight version of m.facebook.com that omits data intensive applications like Photos." Barker also wrote that the impetus behind the initiative was "to make Facebook on the mobile Web available to everyone, anywhere and allow operators to encourage more mobile Internet usage." Zero's due to go live within the next few weeks at zero.facebook.com, although there's no official launch date as of yet. And even though we'll always prefer our Facebook prepared rich and creamy the way Mom made it, we're definitely looking forward to giving this low-calorie, low-cost option a taste.
