COLUMBUS, Ohio —There’s positive news for the unemployed. Local economists predicted Columbus will see a growth in jobs during 2010 but said the growth will be slow.
The number of jobs was expected to grow by 0.1 percent or about 800 jobs. In 2009, Columbus saw a 1.8 percent decrease in jobs.
The health-care industry was expected to see job growth, according to the Blue Chip Economic Forecast from the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
“We’re not-for-profit so we don’t have shareholders,“ said Jon Joffe, vice president of Human Resources at Riverside Methodist Hospital. “The profitability of our business doesn’t necessarily go up and down and affect our hiring because people need care.“
Joffe said Riverside didn’t lay off employees during the recession. Instead, the organization cut back through attrition.
Joffe expected to see a dramatic increase in job applicants this year. He estimated to receive 70,000 applications. But Joffe said there will be 400 to 600 openings at Riverside at any time to accommodate the growing need for services.
“People are going to continually need more and more better care,“ Joffe said. “They’re also going to want it done in a way that is convenient for them.“
Economists also predicted the business and professional services sector will see job growth in 2010.
“I’m not surprised,“ said Marcy Fleisher, owner of Fleisher Communications Group, a company she launched six years ago. “We have seen here, at Fleisher Communications Group, our business increase steadily every single year. In fact, last year was one of our best years barring the lousy economy.“
Fleisher expected to hire more staff this year.
“We wouldn’t do that if we didn’t feel as if this is a good time to do it and we can continue to pay the bills,“ Fleisher said.
Industries that were expected to suffer the largest declines in employment this year included construction and manufacturing.
