DALLAS -- There are signs that the economy is starting to recover from the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, but millions of people are still out of work, and even those fortunate enough to have a job have had to make adjustments in their lifestyle.

Parents might struggle with how to explain to their children why they can't eat out as often or get as many toys as they want. But they can also use the economic downturn to teach money lessons that will carry their kids through adulthood.

"The recession right now has taught everybody that it's back to the basics," said Meridee Maynard, senior vice president at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. "We can't assume that the paycheck is going to increase every single year and that our investments are always safe and sound."

Adjustments that your family has made because of the recession can turn into valuable teaching tools.
